Five Percent: Conserve a Little Energy

If you cannot change the world by yourself, start by making a small change … just 5% less is easy, and here’s how.

Why the iPhone (actually) Matters

Ok, I’m just an iPhone fanboy. This post is entirely off-topic — it has nothing to do with the environment, energy, conservation, or any of that. I should hate the iPhone. But wait. I love the iPhone, and thus, must rationalize my purchase, as I have done in the past with my TV, TiVo, and laptop computer.

Stick with me. Going a bit out on a limb, I believe the iPhone embodies something that gives me (some) hope that us humans will manage to think ourselves out of our global warming issues in three ways (more…)

Green Charitable Giving: Charity for the Environment

Category: Companies,Conservation,Cool Sites,Take Actions – Tom Harrison – 9:55 pm

Want a tax-deductible environmental charitable donation? Maybe your dollars can go to a green charity this year. Here are some of the groups we like to support. What are your favorites? A nice option to balance out the cash flow: most organizations are happy to take a monthly donation by credit card.

Some of my favorites are:

Oygenics Elite 700 Water Saving Low Flow Shower Head Review

Category: Conservation,Green Reviews,Save Water,Take Actions,Tips – Tom Harrison – 9:56 pm

Our Favorite

Our Favorite

I think we found a winner: the Oxygenics Elite 700 provides a very pleasing, comfortable, and efficient shower with very, very little water — as little as 1 gallon per minute. I beats our older model, which was surprisingly good, providing a better shower but using 1/3 to 1/2 the water! It blows away the Delta low-flow shower head I reviewed last week; most efficient and much, much nicer. I am still curious about the Bricor model reviewed by GreenGear.

Not to be outdone by GreenGear’s high-tech bathroom videography, I made my very own movie using a digital camera which you can view below. I should have shaved, and who knew I had such a big bald spot on my head. Oh, and next time I’ll brush my hair. (more…)

Water Saving Showerhead Review: Delta

Category: Conservation,Green Reviews,Household,Save Water,Take Actions,Tips – Tom Harrison – 6:03 pm

I purchased a Delta water saving 1.6 GPM shower head. It is not a good bet. See this good review at GreenGear, and I added a comment describing the painful needles that sting into your back and face. Ah, engineering at its finest. I’ll try something else and report back

Lawmakers Set Deal on Raising Fuel Efficiency (more talk, still no action)

Category: News,Political,Transportation – Tom Harrison – 11:09 pm

Friday, it appears that some additional congressional talking was done about CAFE standards, leading glacially towards a bill that seems to be more likely to pass, despite the car companies’ claims of how badly it would harm their businesses. My observation is that they seem to be more culpable themselves of harming their businesses than any past or present government actions have ever been. (more…)

NY Times Article on Green Scammers

Category: Observations – Tom Harrison – 10:55 pm

You know that your cause has reached some level of breadth and market viability when people start using it to sell product. How sad, in a country obsessed with consumption that this is true. And “TerraChoice Environmental Marketing” has taken it upon themselves to define the high road, as reported in an article from last week in the NY Times. Whether it be Green Spam, the people selling shower heads that don’t use less water, or companies who think they just need to buy some renewable energy credits and all will be well, the signs are all here.

We’re getting into the interesting part of the debate on what it will take to really deal with our climate and energy crises.

Green Spam

Category: Observations,Technology – Tom Harrison – 10:43 pm

I get a lot of spam at work since I get all the email that isn’t addressed to anyone real. Most of it is cut off at the pass by our mail server, most of the rest gets directed to my Spam folder, and 5 or 10 a day find their way into my inbox. I can assure you that most are directed towards men and having a subject you can guess. The Nigerian scam emails have dwindled to almost nothing, phishing spams are still occasional, and stock tips about new, undiscovered companies are still around.

But I had not seen “green” spam until I got the following message; by far the most literate, technically accurate, and socially acceptable spam I have every seen:

From: [*** name removed at request of sender ***] [mailto:******@yahoo.com]
Sent: Tuesday, November 20, 2007 8:58 AM
To: *** numerous addresses, including a bogus one to our company ***
Subject: It Cannot Hurt to Keep this on Your Mind….

Act Now on Climate Change: Go For Energy Efficiency.

The latest report on the state of global warming from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ((IPCC) warns that without action soon climate change may cause abrupt and irreversible impacts. (more…)

Another Reason Leaf Blowers Suck

Category: Garden,Observations – Tom Harrison – 10:26 pm

Friday night, after a long week of work, we settled down to sleep, alarm off, a little extra sleep envisioned in our rapidly approaching dreams. Saturday after 7AM, our dreams were broken by the sounds of leaf blowers. Three men, three leaf blowers, an an idling truck all running continuously between 7:15 and 8:15 were clearing fallen leaves from across the street. The machines were loud. They were stinky. Nothing new here. Except one thing: wind. (more…)
