Doing Something Green update

Category: Cool Sites,Take Actions – Tom Harrison – 4:28 pm

A few weeks ago I threatened to release my new site. Its first incarnation is now up at doingSomethingGREEN.info. What can you do? You can sign up, and once you have you can take a survey. Woo hoo!

The site really doesn’t have a name yet. All I know is that it will not be “doingSomethingGREEN”. I have a couple of other domain names and maybe next week I’ll ask for feedback on names. For now, it’s a site with no name.

I am building some cool stuff in the background. While I do, I will be exposing little bits and pieces of the site, and posting some surveys to get a handle on where I should take things first. This first round is mostly just a test to make sure things work, but I am interested in your opinions, too. If you want to just sign up, I’ll let you know when there are notable developments.

Onward and upward!

On March 29, Turn Out The Lights for One Hour: Earth Hour

Category: Conservation,Cool Sites,Little Things,Save Electricity,Take Actions – Tom Harrison – 10:29 am

Several readers have posted comments suggesting I look into Earth Hour US. It’s an effort to raise awareness, participants will turn off their lights for one hour on Friday March 29th at 8pm. It’s a small step, of course, but I think we can all learn from taking small steps.

A few years ago, we started taking small steps in our household to conserve energy. Our energy usage continues to fall, year over year since we started; we continue to become more and more aware of how we use energy that provides no benefit. I’ll bet we use at least 1/3 less energy now than in the past, yet none of the changes we have made have made any significant impact on how we live our life. It all started with a relatively small step.

Put the date on your calendar and join the others across the world taking this small first step.

Are You Doing Something Green?

Category: Cool Sites,Take Actions – Tom Harrison – 9:51 pm

I am now spending a couple days per week of what used to be paid time working on launching a new website. It’s going well: I have most of the plumbing set up, and mostly need to wire together the last bits of the very first phase, at which point, I’ll ask anyone who stops by here to pay the new site a visit. You can even check out http://doingsomethinggreen.info to see the “it works!” version of the website. There’s not much to see, but there’s actually a fair amount of work behind the one page.

More news soon :-)

Note To Self: How To Communicate Effectively

Category: Cool Sites,Take Actions – Tom Harrison – 11:21 am

A quick note about a great site in the UK discussing some of the better ways to communicate the issues of climate change. In short, anger, venom and “but don’t you understand we’re all going to die” are not winning arguments. Go figure!

Junk Mail: Direct Marketing Association vs. Do Not Mail registry

Category: Companies,Take Actions,Tips – Tom Harrison – 10:30 am

I got a message from GreenDimes today indicating that the Direct Marketing Association is fighting back against attempts to opt out of junk mail lists. This shows that their work and that of others is making a difference, and also shows how regressive DMA is.

Sign the GreenDimes petition to create a national Do Not Mail Registry! You don’t have to be a member.

And then check out GreenDimes and sign up!
