If You Say Something Enough, It’s True (So I Do)

Category: Rants – Tom Harrison – 11:35 pm

It\'s True!

It's True!

OK, so yesterday I wrote a nice review of compact fluorescent bulbs and did my environmental thing. But what’s on my mind these days is a little less direct: is the current strategy of the McCain campaign just to say things that aren’t true, hoping knowing that people listening will believe it?

All evidence so far, and from the last few elections and the administrations that follow suggest that people will believe what you tell them, especially if you tell them over and over.

However, the lie has to be done well (and repeatedly). When Bill Clinton said he had not had sex with “that woman” we all knew he way lying. See, he’s a Democrat, so really not very good at lying in a convincing way, since no one else would repeat his denial.

But when Bush promotes the “Clear Skies Initiative” we kind of all know that it isn’t really going to make our skies clear, in the sense of being clean, or less polluted or anything like that, but instead something more … opposite. Except hat hundreds of spokesmen and spokeswomen and “journalists” all say something about “Clear Skies”, so it’s what we believe.

So I am wondering, as we listen to the relentless defamation of Obama, and the relentless … “famation” (?) of McCain and Palin what are we to believe. Certainly not the liberal elite media! No, they are all just puppets of the machine. Well, should we believe the ads, or the corporate media (for example, Fox)?

The correct answer is: believe the sound bites that are most frequently repeated. It’s really the only fair and balanced way to assess the truth, isn’t it?

Truth is what matters, but it’s really hard to pin down. We hear so many confusing and contradictory things. And actual facts are no better — they are so … challenging and inconvenient. So, it’s our fundamental beliefs (and the people who repeat them to us) and our proud and noble veteran leaders who “approve this ad” that we must listen to. As long as they have enough money to repeat the message (or get their surrogates to do it for them). A lot.

This strategy, repeating something so frequently that it became true, has worked since we were in grade school. The teacher seems to have told Barack to write “I will not tell lies” 100 times on the board — it worked then, and seems to work now.

To be fair, I don’t, for a moment believe that John McCain would actually do many of the things he is currently saying he would do if elected. John McCain isn’t even close to the guy that he and the machine have twisted him to become (in order to have a chance to become President). That’s the good news; the bad news is that while some of what he would actually do is not as regressive as he says, on the other hand there are some things that are far worse. But I digress.

This isn’t about what John McCain’s actual actions will be. That’s neither knowable, nor relevant, is it? (Again, to be fair, it’s conceivable that the same holds for Obama). These guys are politicians, and it kind of goes with the territory. One must be skeptical of what a politician says, right?

Well, sure. But something new has happened in the last 5 years. Or 10, or 20, or perhaps 27, which is when Nixon’s bald lies and deceptions were revealed and our country became cynical.

And so, we rightly believe very, very little of what we hear on the news, and perhaps especially when it is from the mouths of our leaders. BJ? That’s not “sex”. WMD? Well, it didn’t matter there were none. We believe very little of what we hear.

Yet, we must come to believe something. Two sources that we have trusted as a nation for centuries, our leaders, and the Press who check what they are saying, cannot be believed. They have lost our trust.

So now, we believe he or she who repeats a thing the most times, and with the greatest conviction in their voice, and with the greatest ability to connect to what you’re feeling at the given moment — that person is the one we believe.

We no longer believe in the possibility of truth. Way to many TV ads have shown us that everything must be filtered. And then our filters turn out to be unreliable, so we are left only to draw our own conclusions. Which candidate seems to have the least undesirable, least filthy position.

Not that I am cynical, or anything.

But this leaves us vulnerable to the current strategy: say it enough, and it becomes the thing we base our decisions upon. No, not the truth, and who knows what the actual facts are? (It seems like every statement of apparent fact can be countered instantly with an apparent contradiction).

And so, I decide now to enter the fray and use the only strategy that appears to work: say something enough times and we consider it a little more. So, without further ado, I offer the following:

John McCain’s Secret Past Revealed

John McCain secretly worked for the New York Times during the Vietnam War, which, an anonymous source revealed yesterday, fabricated his military service record in order to place him as a mole, embedded in the conservative establishment. His several attempts to become the US President are the realization of over 30 years of stealth liberalism, which he now cunningly suggests are simply his “maverick” tendencies. The records show that McCain is actually a socialist.

But just saying this doesn’t make it true (which of course it is not). But what is truth, anyway? And thus, I leave you now with the following:

John McCain secretly worked for the New York Times during the Vietnam War, which, an anonymous source revealed yesterday, fabricated his military service record in order to place him as a mole, embedded in the conservative establishment. His several attempts to become the US President are the realization of over 30 years of stealth liberalism, which he now cunningly suggests are simply his “maverick” tendencies. The records show that McCain is actually a socialist.

  2. You are fabulous! You sound about as fed up with the McCain lies and fabrications as I do. But you stated it so much better.

  3. John McCain has a secret agenda. He plans to force white middle class families from their homes and give them to illegals.

You know, the only problem with this kind of truth telling is that it could be bring out the Quaker vote for McCain.

  5. Hey, maybe something like this could become a viral internet thing, making its way into the inboxes of the US. Apparently a resident of Wasilla, AK wrote a somewhat unfavorable report of their former Mayor to a friend, who posted it somewhere and now millions of people have read it.

    Who knows.

  6. There is a silver lining here. Most (hmm? some? no, most) people are followers and want and need a leader to tell them what to believe. If a truly wise and benevolent dictator got into office then the problems of energy, health care, social security, personal savings and others could be solved easily as he or she repeatedly told us to save, conserve, etc.

McCain may be a closet dictator but he is neither wise, benevolent or ethical.

  7. @Paul — I like your line of thinking.

There’s no shame in being a follower. Are we sheep? No … well not all of us. But leadership is something I think we all crave.

I do the things I am able to; having a strong opinion, or the skills to do well at one’s chosen line of work doesn’t mean we’re qualified to lead the free world. Or, for that matter one’s house — my wife makes many decisions, and I am glad of it. I desperately (hmm? strongly? no, desperately) want a leader who is strong enough to take the kinds of actions you suggest.

I’m not sure Obama is the guy. However I think he might be, and nothing I see says he can’t be. I was equally unsure of McCain; he has been amongst the best of the Republicans, not falling in line with the bizarre and, in my opinion, disastrous course of actions we have been taking, even if more of a hawk than I think appropriate.

But then, I think he showed his true hand — trailing badly and persistently, he got a new game plan, became a born-again Republican and is now saying, and worse, doing whatever he needs to to get elected. In these times, that means using the power and influence of his position to abuse the leader/follower relationship — he’s intentionally (hmm? probably? no, intentionally) deceiving us prospective followers, and intentionally making irrevocable decisions.

This is not the sign of the strong leader we need. This is a sign of weakness of character and of desperation. (These are the very things Republicans have been accusing McCain of for years — perhaps they were right).

The scary thing is that such strategies seems to be the most effective way to get elected these days.
