@Paul — I like your line of thinking.

There’s no shame in being a follower. Are we sheep? No … well not all of us. But leadership is something I think we all crave.

I do the things I am able to; having a strong opinion, or the skills to do well at one’s chosen line of work doesn’t mean we’re qualified to lead the free world. Or, for that matter one’s house — my wife makes many decisions, and I am glad of it. I desperately (hmm? strongly? no, desperately) want a leader who is strong enough to take the kinds of actions you suggest.

I’m not sure Obama is the guy. However I think he might be, and nothing I see says he can’t be. I was equally unsure of McCain; he has been amongst the best of the Republicans, not falling in line with the bizarre and, in my opinion, disastrous course of actions we have been taking, even if more of a hawk than I think appropriate.

But then, I think he showed his true hand — trailing badly and persistently, he got a new game plan, became a born-again Republican and is now saying, and worse, doing whatever he needs to to get elected. In these times, that means using the power and influence of his position to abuse the leader/follower relationship — he’s intentionally (hmm? probably? no, intentionally) deceiving us prospective followers, and intentionally making irrevocable decisions.

This is not the sign of the strong leader we need. This is a sign of weakness of character and of desperation. (These are the very things Republicans have been accusing McCain of for years — perhaps they were right).

The scary thing is that such strategies seems to be the most effective way to get elected these days.

There is a silver lining here. Most (hmm? some? no, most) people are followers and want and need a leader to tell them what to believe. If a truly wise and benevolent dictator got into office then the problems of energy, health care, social security, personal savings and others could be solved easily as he or she repeatedly told us to save, conserve, etc.

McCain may be a closet dictator but he is neither wise, benevolent or ethical.

Hey, maybe something like this could become a viral internet thing, making its way into the inboxes of the US. Apparently a resident of Wasilla, AK wrote a somewhat unfavorable report of their former Mayor to a friend, who posted it somewhere and now millions of people have read it.

Who knows.

You know, the only problem with this kind of truth telling is that it could be bring out the Quaker vote for McCain.
